Letter sent today from Andrew Wilkie to Victoria’s Racing Integrity Commissioner demanding the suspension of this weekend’s Australian Cup Carnival at the Meadows in light of the live baiting scandal.
Mr Sal Perna
Racing Integrity Commissioner
Office of the Racing Integrity Commissioner
POBox24034
Bourke Street
MELBOURNE VIC 3001
Dear Mr Perna,
Given what we now know of the widespread use of live baiting by many greyhound
trainers in Victoria, I do not understand how you can allow the Australian Cup
Carnival at the Meadows to go ahead.
According to media reports, supported by many callers to my office, the practice is
rampant throughout Australia. Surely the only course of action open to you is to put
a stop to all greyhound racing in Victoria until the results of a thorough
investigation are known.
I note from media reports that you admit you do not really know the extent of this
criminal behaviour. If that is the case, you must be duty-bound to halt all greyhound
racing in Victoria and only allow its resumption when you are satisfied all those
breaking the law have been held to account and that you have an adequate,
independent regulatory regime in place.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Wilkie MP
