Airport Runway Extension
I welcome the Federal Government’s confirmation of their investment in an extended runway at the Hobart International Airport, which presents enormous opportunities for Tasmania.
The initial $3.035 million announced today will fund the planning phase of the project, including engineering, planning approvals and environmental assessment.
This is the first instalment of the Federal Government’s $38 million commitment to extend the runway by 500 metres.
The runway extension will build on our global reputation as the gateway to the Antarctic, allowing larger and longer range aircraft to use the airport.
The extension will also create further opportunities to build on the record number of tourists visiting our state, by allowing or permitting direct international flights.
It also has the potential to foster trade linkages such as air freight exports of high value agricultural products to Asian markets.
I look forward to continuing to work with the Federal Liberal Government on this exciting project.
