Artist’s statement
Born in Bialystok, Poland, I spent my childhood in the countryside surrounded by beautiful meadows, fields and forests. I completed High School in Warsaw and graduated from the Warsaw Agricultural University with a Science Masters Degree in Food Technology and Human Nutrition. I worked for several years as a Lecturer and Research Assistant at the Medical Academy in Warsaw.
While in Poland I learned about all forms of art through exhibitions, theatres, museums and books on art history. At this time I tried to express my fascination with art by writing somewhat juvenile, romantic poems. But the seed was planted when I discovered the book by David Weiss ‘Naked came I’ about Auguste Rodin, and the following year (1974) I visited the Rodin Museum in Paris. It was an unforgettable experience.
In the 1970s the political and economic situation in Communist Poland was gradually deteriorating. In 1977 I decided to leave Poland in a quest for freedom, settled in Sydney, where I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics at the Sydney University, and worked for some years as a dietitian.
During this time, I discovered a new freedom in visual art, exploring the world of two dimensions by using simple lines, colours, ink and textures, and in 3D by modelling in clay/wax, casting in various materials, carving or welding.
Above all, I am aiming for simplicity and honesty in the medium.
Tasmania, where I arrived in 1999, inspired my quest in abstraction. I have always believed in what Piet Mondrian said, “Abstraction has emphasised the old truth that art must be universal, just as true reality is.”
