Tasmanians will be alerted to the dangers of bushfire and the need to be prepared through a new awareness campaign launched today.

This summer’s bushfire campaign urges people to work with the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) by having a well-rehearsed Bushfire Action Plan and knowing exactly what they would do in the event of fire.

As part of the Liberal Government’s Strategic Fuel Reduction Program, the TFS, in conjunction with Parks and Wildlife and Forestry Tasmania, have undertaken more fuel reduction burns this year than at the same time in previous years.

For the first time, Tasmania also has access this summer to fixed wing, water bombing aircraft, as well as the normal fleet of helicopters.

While our professional and volunteer firefighters are well prepared, it is critical residents across the State do their part.

That message will be promoted through the State’s newspapers, on television, radio and through social media and on the TFS web page.

This comprehensive campaign, that I was pleased to launch today, aims to ensure that Tasmanians understand that bushfires are a part of life in this State and that we all need to be prepared and not complacent.

On behalf of the Government, I thank the Tasmania Fire Service and all of our firefighters for their hard work in keeping us safe.
Rene Hidding, Minister for Police and Emergency Management
