Aphra Magazine: Australia’s crowd sourced magazine is all about love… for life, music, art, culture, fashion and most importantly, for writing.

Named after one of the first forward thinking and inspirational English, female, professional writers, Aphra Behn, Aphra Magazine was founded on passion.

Aphra Magazine is about combining the old (magazines) with the new (online). Much like a print magazine Aphra releases an online issue on the 1st of each month, however unlike print they have the ability to update regularly throughout the month, bringing the latest reviews, interviews and news.

Originating as a Tasmanian based online magazine in March 2013, Aphra Magazine has evolved into a nationwide online publication covering events all around Australia with writers based in almost every capital city. Today, Aphra has firmly established themselves as a monthly online publication ( www.aphramag.com ).

After 18 months online Aphra has leapt off the web and onto the page with the help of a crowd funding campaign and Arts Tas grant. Launching their biannual print edition – a compliment to their online magazine – on 24th of September in Melbourne, it’s now time for Hobart to celebrate Aphra’s transition. Produced by a team of young Tasmania’s, Aphra’s print edition is an A4 120 page magazine that features interviews with alt-J, Vance Joy, Basement Jaxx and of course, cover girl Ella Hooper. The magazine also features a wide variety of stories, reflecting the crowdsourced nature of the magazine.

Aphra’s Publisher & Co-Founder, Ellie Oddie-Jones says. ‘I think we underestimated our ambition when we began Aphra. We wanted to build a platform for people who just loved writing. No we’ve produced a 120 page print magazine! It’s not the normal way to go about it, but it’s certainly the Aphra way.’
