Labor Leader Bryan Green is calling on the State Government to be honest and admit the impact $400 million worth of election promises is having on the budget after today it refused to rule out axing front line health and education jobs.
“Given the callous and ham-fisted approach of Peter Gutwein and the budget shambles he has created the Premier must now intervene,” Mr Green said.
“The Liberals’ $400 million of promises at the last election were simply unaffordable and placed the Tasmanian budget in a perilous position.
“Everyone knows the Liberals overpromised in order to win Government when the dire consequences for the budget could not have been clearer.
“The budget mess the Liberals so fondly refer to is largely a mess of their own making because they are being forced to make massive savings to fund their over the top election promises.
“By cutting the jobs of health workers, teachers and other frontline public servants the Government is effectively forcing Tasmanians to bear the pain of their irresponsible promises.
“Now 861 people will pay the price and lose their jobs in the next eight months.
“It’s time for the Will Hodgman to be honest and admit the impact of his promises on the budget.
“Mr Hodgman is prepared to put his unaffordable election promises above all else just to save face and his own political skin.”
