Why the Mt Wellington Pinnacle Special Area should be reduced 4

I propose that the Wellington Park Management Trust prepare a draft Amending Plan to the Wellington Park Management Plan 2013 to reduce the size of the Pinnacle Specific Area.

Section 12.4.3 of the Management Plan states that “Whenever any Park zone boundaries are being considered for change, where possible define boundaries that facilitate better management of the Park’s values, which will generally accord to recognisable geomorphic and land-use features, and/or water catchment boundaries.” Accordingly I propose that the Pinnacle Specific Area be restricted to the relatively flat summit area of Mt Wellington between 1240 and 1270 m. The northern part of the current Pinnacle Specific Area covers the relatively steep northern slope of the mountain between 1240 and 1220 m, another distinct geomorphic area. I therefore propose that this area be removed from the Pinnacle Specific Area and returned to the ‘Natural Zone’.

Please see the attached plan that shows the existing boundary of the Pinnacle Specific Area and the proposed new boundary of the Pinnacle Specific Area. The area proposed to be removed from the Pinnacle Specific Area is approximately 11,000 square meters and is located to the north of the existing northern-most lookout.

Sincerely,

Ben Jones,
South Hobart.
