Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson Kim Booth MP today called on Treasurer Gutwein to withdraw the threats and negotiate with public sector workers or accept responsibility for industrial action that will almost certainly follow.
“Temper tantrums are no substitute for good governance and the Treasurer needs to take a good hard look in the mirror, reflect on what he has done and go back and negotiate in good faith with the unions. Otherwise he has to accept responsibility when public sector workers are forced to take action to defend their rights” said Mr Booth.
“The Treasurer’s behaviour is the action of a petulant child; its typical of a school yard bully who stamps their feet and runs home with their bat and ball when they don’t get their own way, and that is no way to run the State” Mr Booth said.
“Sacking public sector workers who are employed under the defined benefits superannuation scheme could cause a massive budgetary blow-out. The Treasurer will be targeting younger workers who are not on a defined benefit, which will seriously damage the delivery of vital frontline services, and that is the last thing Tasmania needs at the moment” said Mr Booth.
