The Liberal Government is committed to building on our competitive strengths, especially tourism.

We have a target of attracting more than 1.5 million visitors to our state every year by 2020, which the industry says will create 8,000 new jobs.

Tourism Tasmania will be crucial in helping us to achieve this target. The now stand-alone State Authority has refocussed and has its sights firmly set on marketing; to make sure Tasmania is at the top of travellers’ must see list.

The role of the board will be vital to the success of Tourism Tasmania.

Following the recent appointment of Dr James Cretan to the role of Chairman, the final two vacancies on the board have been filled.

I congratulate the new Directors Michelle Cox and Kate Vale.

Kate Vale has almost two decades experience in digital media and marketing, most recently worked for Spotify, Australia and New Zealand, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Michelle Cox has worked as the Managing Director of STA Travel in the Asia Pacific region and is currently the Director and Company Shareholder at Bastion EBA sponsorship agency, and the Linchpin Company marketing firm.

Both have significant experience in marketing and will significantly enhance the strategic and creative capabilities of the board.

The latest figures show that in the 12 months to March about 1.06 million interstate and international visitors toured our island.

I look forward to working with the board to build on this encouraging trend.
Will Hodgman, Premier Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events
