Labor Leader Bryan Green has called on Premier Will Hodgman to show leadership in the face of the chaos left by the Treasurer.

“Peter Gutwein threw one of the great tantrums in the Legislative Council yesterday and now there’s pressure on Will Hodgman to bring sanity to the situation.

“The Treasurer put 500 public servants, including those on the front line, on the chopping block while upper house MPs were giving him an option.

Before the election, Will Hodgman was at pains to comfort public servants about the Liberals’ plans.

He said, “We have outlined an alternative way which is certainly achievable and which will not disrupt
the public service or impact on the services Tasmanians need and rely on.”

“In light of statements like that, it’s not too late for the Premier to sit down with Unions and negotiate a sensible outcome of behalf of his work force,” Mr Green said.

“This is not a time for theatrics and spiteful ultimatums, it’s a time for cool heads to prevail.

“Will Hodgman should use the weekend to meet with union leaders and work out an amicable way forward.

“The Legislative Council cannot be blamed for the Liberal Government’s startling incompetence.

“The Liberal Government needs to quickly work out that its crash through approach does not result in good outcomes for Tasmania.”
