Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne is calling on the Liberal Government to listen to community concerns and reinstate pathway planners under the Guaranteeing Futures program.

“School and business communities are united in their condemnation of this ruthless Hodgman Government cut,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff must admit that his Government has got it wrong in sacking pathway planners.

“Mr Rockliff still has the power to unpick this thoughtless, short-term and misguided cut.

“Countless stories are being told by past and present students, as well as parents and community leaders, of the good work that these skilled professionals do.

“If the Government is genuinely committed to retention, specifically qualified experts with industry experience and relationships are essential.

“The evidence is clear that Guaranteeing Futures staff help increase retention rates and indeed life outcomes for young Tasmanians.

“Mr Rockliff must surely know from his conversations with teachers, principals and the department that pathway planners are vital in the Tasmanian education system.

“He should reinstate the approximately 50 pathway planners and admit that his government has stuffed this one up.”
