Already damned by his own words when in Opposition, Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff has conceded on the record that pathway planners are frontline workers.

In what amounts to a broken promise, Mr Rockliff told a budget estimates committee today “pathway planning is an essential frontline service”.

Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said with that admission in place, Mr Rockliff should scrap his plans to axe about 50 pathway planners employed under Guaranteeing Futures.

“In Mr Rockliff’s own words he’s admitted he is sacking frontline workers and breaking an election promise not to,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“School and business communities are united in their condemnation of this ruthless Hodgman Government cut.

“Pathway planners have been shown to improve outcomes for students as they navigate through the education system and into the workforce.

“This cut flies in the face of efforts to increase retention rates.

“Like other members of the Hodgman Government, Mr Rockliff refuses to listen to evidence and is determined to not consult with anyone before putting policies into place.

“Today’s performance by Mr Rockliff in estimates shows he is determined to not answer questions as he and other Liberal members of the committee engage in filibustering to avoid scrutiny.”
