Proposals to cut the travelling Smithton magistrate courts have sparked serious concerns, with the Greens calling for an urgent rethink of the move.

“Justice needs to be accessible, and the government’s latest announcement will disadvantage low income earners, particularly those who cannot afford a car,” Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP said today.

“Justice done locally boosts community confidence in our judicial system, but the government is making it more expensive for people who will have to travel further to access the courts.”

“The Liberals need to stop making up policy on its run, and instead ensure there are adequate funds invested to ensure justice can be done in a timely manner and that local people have access to local justice,” Mr McKim said.
