In response to the recent article by the ABC,
( http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-08-26/government-bid-to-tear-up-forestry-peace-deal-set-to-pass/5695936 )
regarding the new forest legislation and the Tamar Valley pulp mill permits being available for sale, Lucy Landon-Lane, spokesperson for community group Pulp the Mill Inc said,
“The community opposition to this pulp mill in the Tamar Valley has not gone away. Any prospective buyer of the permits needs to understand that the opposition to this project is as strong as it ever was. The project was fast tracked in 2007, without adequate and independent assessment of the environmental and social impacts that this pulp mill would have on the Tamar Valley, Bass Strait and the 100,000 people living in the vicinity. It was fast-tracked again earlier this year when the Supreme Court case between the Tasmanian Conservation Trust and Gunns over whether “substantial commencement” of the project had been reached in 2011 was over-ruled by new legislation passed through Parliament. The community will not allow this corrupted project to be built in the Tamar Valley.
“While we believe it is highly unlikely that there is a prospective buyer of the pulp mill permits, we will remain vigilant and ready to take action if the need arises.”
