Tasmania is once again punching above its weight with tonight’s GovHack awards showcasing our home-grown talent.

GovHack is a national competition run each year where participants take datasets and create new and improved ways for users to understand the information.

The Liberal Government contributed a range of data sets this year on crash data, bus timetables and health data.

GovHack is a key event on the IT calendar which has the potential to make government more effective and efficient, improve transparency and accountability and create economic development and innovation opportunities.

The Liberal Government is supporting the ICT community to increase Tasmania’s economic wealth, productivity and business competitiveness.

I was particularly pleased to present two awards tonight (Sunday).

The Most Outstanding Tasmanian Benefit prize was awarded to Alex Leith for the project Alex’s Tas Crash Maps, which is a series of maps showing Tasmania’s motor vehicle accidents across the state.

The Innovation Award went to the wonderfully named ‘All You Need Is Gov’ for their project What is Gov (Baby Don’t Hurt Me) for creating an iPhone game which educates people about government functions and structures.

Tasmania also impressed on the national stage, with four local teams through to the national awards in Brisbane. Of these, Tasmania won three categories, three second-places and several highly commended awards.

I congratulate all entrants and look forward to an even bigger event next year.
