The Liberal Government must reveal its true intentions for Hydro Tasmania.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said the ousting of David Crean as chair of Hydro Tasmania was clearly only the tip of the iceberg of the Liberals’ plans for the business.
“Enough with the weasel words – the highly competent and successful chair of Hydro Tasmania has been told to stand aside because the Liberal Government has other plans for the business,” Mr Green said.
“Matthew Groom needs to explain exactly what he means by ‘renewal’.
“Is part of this ‘renewal’ selling Momentum and Entura?
“Is part of this ‘renewal’ installing in a doormat Chair who won’t resist Mr Groom and Will Hodgman’s Liberal agenda to strip a proud Tasmanian company to a rump.
“Hydro is delivering a profit to the Tasmanian Budget and any moves to radically change paths, dressed up as ‘renewal’ should be viewed very sceptically by the Tasmanian people.
“Hydro is already under attack from Eric Hutchinson and other Liberals in Canberra, who have axed the price on carbon, which was delivering a huge windfall to state coffers.
“And now Joe Hockey and Eric Hutchinson are saying the Hydro should be sold to pay for the shortfall Mr Hockey left when he slashed health and education funding.
“Matthew Groom must assure Tasmanians that the new Chair of Hydro will be an independent figure who won’t merely be a patsy of right-wing Liberal ideologues.”
