15 August – 28 September

The Devonport Regional Gallery’s upcoming exhibition showcases the extraordinary sculptural object’s crafted by Colin Langridge.

Colin Langridge’s art is motivated by a resonance with and curiosity of mediums’ properties and qualities. An understanding of how materials behave and how they can be used is achieved through lengthy experimentation – turning raw materials into new states of existence over a period of months.

To stimulate what Langridge refers to as ‘a sense of wonder’, the artist explores outmoded construction techniques, namely coopering and clinker boat building. These techniques are the foundation over which layers of paint, rubber and varnish are applied.

The more Langridge fine-tunes his process and technique, the closer he comes to presenting the viewer with art objects that appear simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar. Langridge observes: ’Things that initiate a state of wonder and hyper-awareness are fundamental to my practice, where the artworks are often suspended in an indeterminate position between the unfamiliar and the familiar.

The Gallery will offer Education programs with the exhibition including 1,2,3 Create for babies and toddlers; Little Aesthetics for early years to grade 6 and floor talks for High School, College and University students. Bookings for these programs are essential.

Colin Langridge will present a floor talk at midday on Saturday August 16th.
