Congratulations to Tasmanian hockey player Eddie Ockenden on winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 27-year-old scored the Kookaburra’s fourth goal in the final to ensure the emphatic defeat of India overnight.

Eddie is not only an extraordinary athlete but an impressive Tasmanian who has proven tireless in pursuit of his dream to represent his country, and an inspiration for future champions.

Eddie’s success also cements Tasmania’s reputation for producing some our country’s finest hockey players, with a Tasmanian athlete having been a part of the Australian teams which have won gold at every Commonwealth Games since hockey was introduced in 1998.

Our athletes competing at the 20th Commonwealth Games have given Tasmanians a great sense of pride and ensured we are never left off the map.

Three of our seven athletes have won medals, including Cyclist Amy Cure who won a silver and bronze and javelin thrower Hamish Peacock, compared to one at the previous Games in India.

I’m sure all Tasmanians will share in congratulating our athletes on their achievements and thank them for putting us on the map.
