The Hodgman Liberal government has been accused of trying to hide significant Treasury and Energy matters behind the Triabunna Mill Parliamentary Inquiry’s first day of public hearings.
“It is no coincidence that the Treasurer releases his so-called ‘preliminary estimates’ update at 3:30 in the afternoon on the same day that the first public hearings of the bread and circuses Triabunna Mill Inquiry are underway,” Mr Booth said.
“Clearly the Liberals are trying to hide from scrutiny and the fact that it doesn’t matter how often they redo the state’s financial figures, it always comes back as an indictment on their push to strip Tasmania of at least $70 million each year in lost carbon tax dividends.”
“A revised deficit of $44 million is significant, however the fact remains that the state’s bottom-line would look much healthier if the carbon tax, ripped up by the Abbott government and egged on by Mr Hodgman, was still in place.”
“Over ten years, the estimated lost carbon tax revenue to Tasmania equates between $700 million and a billion.”
“No wonder the Liberals wanted to bury this financial update late on a day when they are hoping people will be blind-sided by their Triabunna Mill witch-hunt.”
“Tasmanians will see through such a cynical and ham-fisted tactic employed by the Liberals today,” Mr Booth said.
