Shadow Minister for Small Business Madeleine Ogilvie has welcomed Eric Abetz backing down on his target of 40 applications a month for the unemployed.

“I welcome Mr Abetz backing down on this ridiculous requirement,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“Small business owners have far more important things to do with their time than sort through piles of applications from applicants forced to meet the ‘Abetz quota’.

“On this very rare occasion Mr Abetz appears to be listening to community opinion.

“His constant defending of the 40-job requirement was completely out of touch, and Mr Abetz has finally admitted it.”

Ms Ogilvie had offered jobseekers the opportunity to apply with her office to comply with the ridiculous Liberal regulation.

“This is one piece of blue tape torn to shreds,” Ms Ogilvie said.

“Job seekers need programs to help them find work, not punitive punishments.

“I call on Eric Abetz to now abolish the six-month waiting period for payments for young unemployed people.”
