The State Liberal Government will top up spending on concessions for Tasmanians in this week’s budget.
An extra $9 million per annum will be spent to fill a gap in the $300 million concession scheme following a funding cut by the Federal Government.
As a result, I can assure all those who receive concessions, they will continue to receive their concessions unchanged.
We have said all along that this week’s Budget is not a budget to be afraid of and that it will not hurt vulnerable or disadvantaged Tasmanians, and this is further proof of that.
It is also further evidence of the wisdom of delaying our Budget so we could take account of, and adjust in response to, the Federal Budget.
Overall, an additional $35.6 million will be spent over the next four years by the Tasmanian Liberal Government to help with costs including rates, electricity, water and sewerage, public transport and drivers’ licences.
Of the total $300 million, about 63% or approximately $180 million is spent helping Tasmanians with cost of living expenses.
It also assists people with healthcare, education and recreational expenses.
In all there are 88 different types of concessions available to help Tasmanians, not only with cost of living and other expenses, but also to participate and be included in their community.
The concession scheme also helps people to visit Tasmania’s National Parks, be in the audience at events at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, complete an Adult Education course or travel on the Spirit of Tasmania.
The Liberal Government is committed to supporting Tasmanians who are vulnerable and need support.
