It is with great sadness we have learned of the death of His Excellency the Honourable Peter Underwood AC.

His Excellency died last night after a short illness, he was 76.

Tasmania’s 27th Governor, His Excellency served Tasmania with distinction in the law and in his vice regal duties.

During his legal career he was a distinguished trial advocate for more than 20 years and was later appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, before being appointed the Chief Justice between 2004 and 2008.

His judicial leadership saw him made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2002.

As Governor, His Excellency brought dignity, compassion, a social conscience, a sharp sense of humour, warmth and intellect to the role.

He was a man of tremendous capacity and closely connected to the community.

At Government House, His Excellency and his wife Frances were gracious hosts to a wide range of international, national and local dignitaries as well as everyday Tasmanians.

A hard-working team, the Underwoods promoted the interests of Tasmania at every turn.

On behalf of the Government and all Tasmanians, my heartfelt sympathy goes to Mrs Frances Underwood and their family.

Further information about funeral arrangements will be made after speaking with the family.

The Honourable Justice David Porter is currently Administrator. However, The Honourable Chief Justice Alan Blow has cut short a conference interstate and will return to Tasmania and assume the role of Lieutenant-Governor tomorrow.
