Today I took part in the annual Tasmanian Reserve Forces Day parade and review.
It’s almost a century since our first Reservists left the Hobart docks for World War I in October 1914. About 1,000 departed, but only 600 returned.
It is a fitting time to reflect and pay thanks for the commitment of our past and serving Reservists.
Australian Defence Reservists have ordinary jobs, but are ready to step into extraordinary situations to help their local communities and support countries that are devastated by war or natural disasters.
Last year, Tasmanian Reservists provided valuable assistance in the aftermath of the devastating Dunalley bushfires.
I sincerely thank the men and women of Reserve Forces, but also their families and employers who support them.
It was also fitting to today unveil a new commemorative plaque on Ocean Pier, made possible with a $3,000 government grant, which replaces an original destroyed by fire in 1948.
