Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne has cautiously welcomed findings from the Productivity Commission into Childcare and Early Learning but said quality teaching was vital to the future of the sector.
“It is encouraging to see the recommendation that a single means-tested subsidy is paid to providers,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“It is positive to see the Commission also allowed for the possibility of a top-up subsidy for children with special needs or disabilities.
“Our early educators are of the highest quality and there is overwhelming support for the National Quality Framework.
“Any move to extend care qualifications must stay within the QNF and must not be at the expense of current providers.
“Quality early childhood educators are vital for the childcare and early learning in our state.”
Ms O’Byrne backed calls for the Productivity Commission to hold public hearings in Tasmania as part of its inquiry into Child Care and Early Childhood Learning.
