The Australian Government is providing $3.85 million to support the Tassal Group to construct a new fish by-product processing facility in Triabunna, Tasmania.

As a result of the dismantling of the Forestry industry by the Labor and Greens Government, perhaps no town was impacted more severely than Triabunna.

Federal Member for Lyons Eric Hutchinson announced the funding to Tassal Group as part of the Australian Government’s $106 million Tasmanian Jobs and Growth Package.

“The Tassal Group project is another example of Tasmanian innovation and ingenuity, implementing projects like this one will help to stimulate the local economy and support growth and employment,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“To support the Tassal Group in getting this project up and running, the Australian Government will provide funding towards establishing a fish protein and oil processing facility.

“The project forms part of the Australian Government’s Economic Growth plan for Tasmania, which will also see a $38 million expansion of Hobart airport, development of a new $24 million Centre for Antarctic and Southern Ocean Research as well as a $400 million upgrade of the Midland Highway.”

Mr Hutchinson said once completed, the Triabunna facility would be capable of processing 20,000 tonnes a year of salmon by-product to produce high value added fish protein and fish oil products for both the local and international market.

“The project will provide a best practice facility to support the expanding Tasmanian Salmon industry and assist in sustaining the local economy,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“It will provide long term sustainable employment, with the creation of 30 full time positions during construction, and a further 20 positions within the first two years of operation.”

The Tasmanian Jobs and Growth Package is a $106 million package of measures aimed at building a stronger Tasmanian economy by supporting jobs and growth.
