The Liberal Government is getting on with the job of delivering better roads for Tasmanians with confirmation today Stage Two of the Rokeby Main Road upgrade will start within months.

In addition to improving transport efficiency and road safety, the project will enhance access to growing residential areas on the Eastern Shore.

This will encourage further development and boost economic activity as well as supporting the critical civil construction sector.

Tasmanian company Andrew Walker Constructions Pty Ltd will continue as the lead contractor for the second stage of construction, with Stage One on track for completion by the end of the year. This allows for a seamless construction period and the benefits of the overall upgrade to be delivered sooner.

Fully funded by the Tasmanian Government, the $15 million Stage Two project will see the final ‘missing link’ section of Rokeby Main Rd widened to four lanes. This will complete an efficient, four-lane corridor that will cut travel time and improve safety between Rokeby and Howrah.

As part of the project a decision has been made on improving access to Howrah Gardens, with residents set to access Rokeby Main Rd by a new signal-controlled intersection with Tollard Drive.

The construction of the Tollard Drive connection, in partnership with the Clarence City Council, will ensure that Rokeby Main Rd will become a high standard, urban arterial road with minimal intersections.

The Liberal Government is taking a strategic approach to improving Tasmania’s transport infrastructure, and this project is a great example of what can be achieved.

Work on Stage Two is expected to start about October and be completed by December 2016.
