The Liberals are committed to rebuilding our forestry industry and creating jobs.

Today’s commencement of construction work at Ta Ann’s new $15 million plywood development is further evidence of confidence in the future of our forest industry under the Liberal Government.

Ta Ann’s new plywood mill at Smithton will create 90 jobs during the construction phase and up to 120 new positions when it is fully operational.

The mill will produce new products and open new market opportunities, while also allowing for the local downstream processing of veneer which has previously occurred overseas.

Ta Ann will have an opportunity to win a market share of premium plywood, with imported plywood currently accounting for about 70 per cent of the Australian market, while continuing to sell product into the international veneer market.

Ta Ann is to be congratulated for their decision to further invest in Tasmania and the confidence they have shown in the future of our forest industry.

I also acknowledge the Federal Government for honouring their election commitment to support this proposal with $7.5 million in funding.
