The unveiling of a portrait of Michael Polley today is a testament to his political and public life.
Parliament has seen a transformation since the change of Government, including the retirement of its longest serving Speaker in the House of Assembly.
However, this portrait will hang in the halls of Parliament and serve as a constant reminder of Mr Polley’s legacy after a record 41-years as a Labor Member for Lyons.
Australian artist Vincent Fantauzzo, an Archibald Prize finalist and three time People’s Choice Award winner, has truly captured one of Tasmania’s most colourful characters.
It was an extraordinary year in politics in 1972 when the 22-year-old sewing machine salesman was first elected to Parliament.
Over the decades he’s been a tireless grassroots campaigner, surviving 12 consecutive elections, and has been a constant source of advice for all sides of politics.
There are few who could match his knowledge of Parliamentary institutions and practices, wit and political tact.
We again thank Mr Polley for his service and wish him all the best in his retirement.
Will Hodgman, Premier
