Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s global warming denial extends to climate research, with Tasmania’s marine and atmospheric division set to lose 18 jobs, Greens Leader Christine Milne said today.
“Just as Hobart has gained an international reputation as the centre of excellence in Antarctic and climate research, Tony Abbott is undermining it with his global warming denial,” Senator Milne said.
“Tony Abbott is totally wrong to say acting on climate change clobbers the economy. What clobbers the economy is losing some of our best research brains for the sole purpose of propping up coal.
“The CSIRO is too valuable to be undermined and attacked this way.
“The CSIRO jobs are essential to maintaining Hobart as a scientific hub, by cutting these jobs Abbott is undermining a key element of Tasmania’s economic future.
“It undermines the likelihood of other countries such as China establishing their Antarctic research base in Hobart,” Senator Milne said.
