Tourism Tasmania will become a stand-alone State Authority from July 1 with the brief to increase tourist numbers.

The new Tourism Tasmania will focus on marketing Tasmania and working on the Government’s target of attracting 1.5 million visitors to the state by 2020.

The key changes include:

– The Chief Executive Officer of Tourism Tasmania will report directly to the Minister for Tourism;
– A Ministerial Charter for Tourism Tasmania will be redrafted to reflect the new arrangements and greater independence of the new State Authority;
– The State Budget will contain a separate appropriation for Tourism Tasmania; and
– The principal functions of the new State Authority will be marketing Tasmania as a destination to increase the economic value of tourism.

This Government’s number one priority is growing the economy and creating jobs; tourism will continue to play a key role in achieving this.
