Response to Minister Ferguson’s statement on the RHH Redevelopment
AMA Tasmania notes with regret the announcement of a six month delay to
the Royal Hobart Hospital’s redevelopment but welcomes the Minister’s
assurance that the Government will not abandon the project.
AMA Tasmania regrets the apparent emphasis given by the Government to
Recommendation 52 of the report from the Commission on Delivery of Health
Services in Tasmania.
AMA President Dr Tim Greenaway said the report provided no evidence to
support its claim that the current design over capitalises anticipated future
demand on the RHH or that the proposed redevelopment had been divorced
from any connection to a statewide service plan.
Whatever its misgivings about the delay, AMA Tasmania commits to working
with the Royal Hobart Hospital Rescue Taskforce, but will insist that the
proposed reference group comprise senior clinicians who have experience in
the design of a tertiary hospital facility.
