Hostilities emerged in the closing hours of the first sitting day of Tasmania’s 48th Parliament after hours of pomp, ceremony and apparent conviviality.
New and returned MPs were sworn in, agreeing to abide by Parliament’s code of conduct, with some swearing their oaths on the bible.
But there was an outcry from the Greens when in the evening, Government and Opposition MPs voted down their bid to ask more than two questions in each session.
Greens MP Nick McKim labelled the result an attack on democracy.
“We are now returning back to the dark days of majority government where one political party will ruthlessly use its numbers to deny adequate scrutiny of government,” said Mr McKim.
