Premier Will Hodgman is under increasing pressure to stand up for Tasmania at today’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra, in light of the shockwaves caused by the National Commission of Audit report.

“The acid test is on Will Hodgman. As Premier, he must clearly demonstrate that he represents, and is campaigning for Tasmania, and is not representing or campaigning for the Liberal Party,” said Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson Kim Booth MP.

“Will Hodgman must both state what his position is on the Commission of Audit’s recommendations, and use the opportunity presented by COAG today to send a clear message to Tony Abbott that he will defend Tasmania’s interests.”

“He must demand an unequivocal rejection by the Prime Minister of any proposal to scrap the State Freight Equalisation Scheme or the Bass Strait Vehicle Equalisation scheme.”
“Tasmanians also need to see the Premier demand a guarantee that Tasmania’s share of GST is secure.”

“Will Hodgman must also stand by his commitment to the full Gonski funding for years five and six, and reject any COAG attempts to reopen NDIS negotiations.”

“It is very telling that Tony Abbott refused to release the Commission of Audit report until after the Western Australian Senate election, but before the federal budget later this month.”

“This is a cynical attempt to test the public waters, soften people up for savage and regressive cuts, and cultivate the sales pitch.”

“Mr Hodgman needs to tell Mr Abbott that he is not part of his slick sales team, and that Tasmania rejects the Commission of Audit’s attacks on those key areas vital to the state’s economic future and the well being of our people.”

“Tasmanians can rest assured that the Greens will fight for our communities, for accessible and affordable education, health, housing and disability services, even should the Liberals fail to do so,” Mr Booth said.
