The search for Tasmania’s next Children’s Commissioner will begin next week.
An advertisement will run in newspaper and online classifieds nationally on Saturday May 17.
The position will have a strengthened Statement of Duties, which makes it very clear that the position and the term will be changing as a result of the recommendations of the Harries Report.
Under the Labor Government four commissioners and two acting commissioners came and went between 2004 and 2013. That’s an appalling record.
We don’t want to see future commissioners leaving the job and expressing frustrations about Tasmania and the role.
That’s why this time we need to make sure that we finally get the recruitment process for this very important position right for our kids’ sake.
Changes will be made across the scope and responsibility of the role.
For example an extension of tenure from three to five years, the commissioner to establish further means to consult with young people, establishment of strengthened collaboration between the commissioner and the Ombudsman and enhanced capacity for systemic advocacy.
Most importantly there is now a Government in Tasmania who wants a dedicated, passionate, strong supporter and advocate for Tasmanian children and young people, as they deserve it.
