The news that Qantas is moving its national call centre to Hobart is great news for Tasmania and the Denison electorate in particular.
This is an especially sweet victory for Qantas staff who have campaigned vigorously to save the Glenorchy call centre.
It’s also a big victory for those Tasmanian federal politicians who have been applying pressure to Qantas management. I have repeatedly raised the future of the Glenorchy call centre with Qantas management, including with Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.
The decision to expand the Glenorchy call centre is a victory for common sense because Tasmania has a large pool of available workers as well as lower rents than the mainland. It’s also a wonderful compliment for Tasmanian workers and recognition of their professionalism and ability to get the job done.
