Respect The Mountain – No Cable Car has put together a website to explain why they don’t want a cable car on kunanyi / Mount Wellington. ( http://www.respectthemountain.org.au ). The group had originally tried to secure www.respectthemountain.com.au . However they found it was registered to Adrian Bold.
Spokesperson for the group, Mr. Jason Turvey said: “We’ve had people request more information about why we’re against a cable car and development on the summit of the mountain.
“This website is an avenue for us to continue the conversation as well as dismiss a few myths at the same time.”
Respect The Mountain – No Cable Car wanted to make clear that it wasn’t an anti-everything group that the proponents have tried to label them as.
“There is room for development on the mountain but the best place to tell the story of the mountain is at the heart of it – at The Springs” said Mr. Turvey.
While the group would’ve preferred to see the skyline of the mountain minimised, they were happy to see the new Pinnacle Centre taking shape with heated seating and public telescopes available with new information panels. The toilets at the summit were upgraded in August 2012.
“The next step is The Springs.” Mr. Turvey announced.
“The area is in desperate need of new toilet facilities and the car park is littered with potholes.
“Once they can be upgraded, there needs to be a serious conversation about visitor information services to be based from there.
“Putting a visitor centre on top of the summit of kunanyi / Mount Wellington makes as much sense as putting Hobart’s visitor centre on top of Mt Nelson because of the view.
“The truth is it’s nowhere near the heart of it.
“We want to create a place that not only caters to tourists but somewhere that locals can go to learn about their mountain.
“MWCC seems to put more focus on making sure you’ve got a nice spot to drink a coffee from.
“That might be important in Melbourne or Sydney but it’s not what makes Tasmania stand out to our visitors – it would just feel superficial.”
The website will be regularly updated as more members contribute:
