A new Disability Community Access Centre in Lenah Valley will mean improved access to recreational activities and support for young Tasmanians with a disability.
The Liberal Government funds Supported Tenancy Accommodation and Respite (STAR) Tasmania to provide supported accommodation, community access, individual support and in-home and centre-based respite services for Tasmanians with disability.
I was very pleased to officially open their new centre today along with Senator Eric Abetz, as this new facility will provide weekday recreational activities and support to young people with a disability and much needed respite for carers and family members. It will also be a venue for school holiday programs.
The Community Access Centre supports the personal interests of participants and their choice of support and service provider which is the cornerstone of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS is an initiative we fully back as a government as it will provide more support to more people living with disability.
However we also recognise that 83 percent of Tasmanians living with a disability are on waiting lists for support and don’t qualify for the first stage of the roll out.
That is why the Liberal Government has committed an extra $2 million over four years to deliver additional individual support packages until the full roll out occurs.
