Tibet Groups around the world urge governments to Unite for Tibet
On Monday March 10, Tibetans and their supporters all around the world will commemorate the anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day.
It is now 55 years since the Tibetan National Uprising of 1959, when hundreds of thousands of Tibetans rose up to demand an end to China’s illegal invasion and occupation Tibet.
Since Xi Jinping became China’s President one year ago, China’s grip on Tibet has tightened. The Chinese Government clampdown has meant violent military reactions to peaceful protests by Tibetans, increased use of mass detentions and enforced “patriotic re-education”.
Over the past 5 years the situation in Tibet has caused at least 127 Tibetans to set fire to their own bodies – they have done this in protest against China’s policies of not allowing the Tibetans to follow their own religion or culture and Chinese policy is to criminalise those who set themselves on fire and their families. To own a photo of the Dalai Lama is a crime in China!
Chinese security forces regularly injure or kill peaceful protesters.
Tibetans in Tibet are living under a brutalizing authoritarian regime.
The international community should not stand by and allow Tibetans to live under such severe political and religious repression.
We call on world governments to Stand Together for Tibet.
By working together, governments can more strongly pressure China to end cruelty towards Tibetans and it’s bullying of those nations which support Tibet. China’s behaviour is unacceptable.
WHEN: Monday 10 March at 10am
WHERE: Parliament House Hobart on the Parliamentary Lawns
