Michael Mansell has urged Labor Opposition Leader, Bryan Green, to assume responsibility for Aboriginal Affairs. Mr Mansell said, “For more than twenty years, leaders of both political parties took the lead on Aboriginal Affairs. Premier Hodgman has continued that responsibility by holding the portfolio and we Aborigines urge Mr Green to do the same.

Although we have had few dealings with Mr Green, we found him down-to-earth and supportive of Aboriginal people gaining a benefit from the forest peace deal. We believe he will be prove a pleasant leader for Aborigines to hold talks with.

The people of Tasmania are aware of the shocking history of Aboriginal dispossession. They have shown wonderful support during the reconciliation process. Tasmanians want to be proud that they live in a State where its political leaders took responsibility for remedying historic injustices. Instead of Tasmanians cringing at the past, they can stand proud of dealing directly with the consequences of the past.

The new Government and Opposition should dump the expired Aboriginal Heritage Bill made by the last government. There should be discussions early about the West Coast Aboriginal Landscape zone established by the Federal government, and how Aboriginalising the area rich in heritage can benefit the whole State.”

Mr Mansell said the new makeup of the Parliament gave Aboriginal people a better hope for the future.
