An Iranian asylum seeker who received a deportation notice is in hospital in Hobart after trying to kill himself.

Lawyer Madeleine Ogilvie and an Iranian friend say he tried to commit suicide on Tuesday afternoon after receiving the notice from Immigration Department officials.

The man was living in the community on a bridging visa, after arriving on a boat several years ago.

His visa has now expired and his application for refugee status has been refused.

Ms Ogilvie, who is also a Labor candidate standing in next month’s state election, says her client is distraught.

“My understanding is that things are very serious and this chap is in a very bad way,” she said.
