Situated 30 minutes from Hobart at Pontville, Shene Estate prides itself on being a historic site with modern ideas. Artist on Assignment Director Myfanwy Kernke has announced the inaugural Artists on Assignment Residency Program with award-winning Theatre Company, Arthur (MELB). The residency is Shene Estate’s venture to support high quality independent and commercial arts companies (local and national) by showcasing their work here on this historic Tasmanian site and bringing awareness to its conservation.
Ms. Kernke joined the team at Shene Estate in November 2013 following her role as Front of House Manager at La Boite Theatre Company Brisbane, Queensland. In her role, she managed the 400-seat theatre space nightly and designed and managed special company events including the hugely successful La Boite Indie Bar. She has since settled in Tasmania and is working hard with Team Shene to unleash a fresh and exciting conglomeration of artists and historic conservation.
Shene’s residency program aspires to follow in the footsteps of cultural landmarks like MONA who have successfully made Tasmania an international arts destination. The residency program invites selected artists and companies to stay on site at Shene and create and present work in the 1846 convict-built building, The Barn. By interacting with high-quality artists and their creative process, Artists On Assignment works to bring awareness to the conservation of Tasmanian Heritage by using the buildings as performance and gallery spaces to be experienced by hundreds of artists and audiences far and wide.
“Shene Estate is an incredible part of Australian National History and it needs to play an active role in its own conservation. Sharing our heritage (and our home) with artists will allow this to happen”, Kernke says. “I had the privilege of working with Arthur when they performed CUT SNAKE through the 2013 Brisbane Festival. It as during this time I also had the pleasure of meeting fellow Tasmanian and director of CUT SNAKE Paige Rattray. This company is the perfect fit to launch our residency program”. Arthur will be working at Shene for two weeks on a development of a new work but will also be presenting a special one-off performance of CUT SNAKE utilising the 1846 Barn as a performance space. Ms. Kernke said she is very keen to invite Tasmanians along to the performance. “CUT SNAKE has toured nationally to arts festivals in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and it’s fantastic for us to have them in Tasmania.”
