Lyons Liberal MHR Eric Hutchinson welcomes today’s announcement of $3.3million for Tasmanian Devil projects by federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt.
Mr Hutchinson said that the new funding would be put to excellent use by those involved in programs across the state to build the numbers of healthy Tasmanian devil populations.
The new funding is aimed specifically at fencing off priority areas of devil habitat to form sanctuaries for disease free wild devils.
Mr Hutchinson said that building isolated populations of healthy devils in areas where the iconic animals already existed naturally made sense.
“In the longterm this will be the most cost effective and efficient method,” Mr Hutchinson said.
The money will be used on identified locations across the Lyons’ electorate with more detail to be announced soon.
