The Tasmanian Greens today expressed disappointment at the High Court’s decision to overturn the ACT’s marriage equality laws.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP acknowledged the setback, but said it would be wrong to assume that the judgement means states cannot draft valid laws for marriage equality.

“The Tasmanian Greens will carefully evaluate this judgement before considering how to progress our campaign for marriage equality, but we will certainly not be deterred.”

“The Abbott Government should be condemned for pursuing this case, and for its heartless insistence on maintaining legalised homophobia in our nation’s laws.”

“It is only a matter of time before marriage equality becomes a reality for Tasmania, and for Australia.”
