The Tasmanian Greens today said that any attempt to revive the Tamar Valley pulp mill through a Cabinet sub-committee would not make the project any more real, and would inevitably fail.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the pulp mill remained a mirage, had no social licence, and could not co-exist with the thriving small business-based economy of the Tamar Valley.

“Labor would be much better off using the Cabinet process to encourage investment based on Tasmania’s competitive advantage rather than trying to take us back to the past of undifferentiated product, environmental harm and social division,” Mr McKim said.

“The pulp mill has been on the table for ten years now, and the only company that has ever put a single dollar in to it went broke as a result.”

“The Greens are keen to promote investment opportunities based on Tasmania’s competitive advantages, but we will not support direct taxpayer assistance to the Tamar Valley pulp mill under any circumstances.”
