PALMER United and former Gunns Limited supremo John Gay have been in talks about a Hampshire pulp mill.
The PUP’s man in Braddon, Kevin Morgan, yesterday confirmed he recently met Mr Gay twice and spoke with him on the phone about a potential Tasmanian pulp mill.
Mr Gay was convicted earlier this year after pleading guilty to insider trading.
It related to the sale of Gunns shares. He was fined $50,000.
The maximum penalty the Supreme Court could have handed down was $220,000 or five years’ jail.
Greens Senator Peter Whish- Wilson said he had heard talk of the mill discussions and of PUP Leader and business magnate Clive Palmer possibly buying into a mill project.
The senator called for the facts to be revealed.
“If there is truth to it, Tasmania has had enough backroom deals on the pulp mill. That’s why the whole project stinks,” Senator Whish- Wilson said
A spokesman for Mr Palmer said there had been no consideration of Mr Palmer investing in a mill.
