Libs out to lunch on climate change and bushfire risk

The Tasmanian Greens today said that if the Liberal Party is serious about reducing bushfire risk it would support strong action to tackle climate change.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the Liberals arbitrary target of burning 60, 000 hectares every year has no basis in science, and ignores the finding from the Hyde inquiry into the recent Tasmanian bushfires that, “a strategic approach is preferable to simply setting a quantative target.”

“The science is telling us that climate change means more intense and more frequent bushfires, and while the Liberals remain weak on this issue they have no credibility at all on reducing bushfire risk.”

“Failure to take strong action on climate change actually increases bushfire risk in Tasmania, not decreases it.”
