Annual Human Rights Week Walk, Saturday 30 November, 2013

In celebration of Human Rights Week, Amnesty International’s annual Walk for Human Rights will be held on Saturday 30th November 2013. The year 2013 has seen many human rights challenges and we want to join the Tasmanian community to join us in celebrating some of this year’s human rights wins too, including introducing the international Arms Trade Treaty.

The Walk will depart from the Playhouse Theatre in Bathurst Street at 10.30 am down Murray Street to Parliament Lawns, where a family festival will be held. The Festival will include ten local human rights organisations running different activities including street soccer, face painting and stalls.

Barrister and local social commentator, Greg Barnes, will give a brief address regarding the right to asylum and will be welcomed by Tasmanian President of Amnesty International, Clare Wiseman.

Amnesty International President of the Tasmanian Branch, Clare Wiseman, said “There have been some incredible victories for human rights in 2013. In April the United Nations General Assembly finally adopted an Arms Trade Treaty after 20 years of campaigning by Amnesty International, and in September this year the signatures of over 90,000 Australians were delivered by Amnesty International activists to Federal MPs calling on the Australian Government to make the rights of women and girls central to the peace process in Afghanistan.”

“The Human Rights Week Walk will be a celebration of these achievements, as well as a chance to take action and stand in solidarity with those people who still facing human rights abuses in Australia and around the world”.

“Amnesty International’s vision is a world in which everyone – regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, nationality or political beliefs – enjoys the fundamental rights that are outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We invite as many people as possible to join us in celebration of the rights that we enjoy, and to stand with those who do not yet enjoy them”
