The Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, has today written to the Premier of Tasmania and Opposition Leader suggesting that stamp duty be waived on property transfers by aged pensioners.
“As people get older they may need to downsize from a larger property to a smaller house or unit. Large properties can be difficult to manage or the ongoing costs too high for people on a pension.
“Under the current arrangements pensioners pay stamp duty on a property transfer which may mean they cannot afford the move. Downsizing can greatly assist with cost of living pressures and make pensioners feel more secure in a property they can manage.
“Moreover the property market would benefit as larger homes become available for families. I encourage the Premier and Opposition Leader to agree to exempt aged pensioners from paying stamp duty on the purchase of a new property when it is to be a smaller principle place of residence.”
