The Tasmanian Greens Member for Franklin Nick McKim MP today called for an end to unscrupulous fearmongering by lobbyists opposed to the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2013.
Mr McKim was speaking following a public forum in Devonport, attended by about 40 people.
“These groups are unscrupulously distorting the facts about this Bill,” Mr McKim said.
“This fearmongering is aimed at frightening wavering MPs into opposing the Bill, and unfortunately this approach has worked in the past.”
“Independent surveys show 80% of Tasmanians support this compassionate change, but these lobby groups are very skilled at getting their way by spreading fear and uncertainty.”
“This Bill contains the strongest possible safeguards, which will ensure that both doctors and patients are well protected.”
“I would hope that all MPs simply consider the facts as they are laid out in the Bill, and not be swayed by misinformation.”
Mr McKim thanked everyone who attended the forum.
“There was some very engaged discussion on the Bill, including a number of concerns that the safeguards contained in it were too strong.”
