A forum on “The Future of Marriage equality” held last night in Sydney heard from all sides of poltics about the need for political cooperation to progress the reform. The Panel included Paul Howes, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Clr Christine Forster, Alex Greenwich MP, and AME Deputy Director Ivan Hinton.
Panellists also made the case for the Labor party to join the Greens in blocking any Federal Government attempts to overturn the ACT’s soon to be legislated marriage equality laws.
Australian Marriage Equality Deputy Director Ivan Hinton said:
“It was great to hear that the Labor Party and Greens are already planning the establishment of a cross-party marriage equality working group, which they hope will also include coalition members”
“The international experience proves that when supportive politicians work together across party linesreform has a better chance”
“We also welcome Mr Howes calls for a binding labor party vote to protect the ACT Government’s right to legislate for a reform they were elected to deliver”
“Christine Forster gave the community a great deal of hope that engaging with the Coalition on the importance of marriage equality for families will pay dividends”
Mr Hinton also said:
“it is clear the Clr Forster, Mr Howes, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young are all strongly committed to marriage equality and to working together and with the community to deliver a reform that a growing majority of Australians want”
